Mr. Jeff’s Hidden Talent

Mr. Jeff plays the guitar, sings and writes his own music.

When I first started this project, I had trouble figuring out what an interesting topic would be. I asked my student, Mina, to help me brainstorm news worthy stories around school. The best we could come up with was a story about our assessment coordinator and what her day looks like on a busy testing day. I set up an interview with her and was all ready to interview when a story appeared in my office.

Jeff Reifsteck walked into my office carrying a guitar. It was a strange sight due to the fact that he is one of our school custodians and I’m used to seeing him with a broom or pushing around a garbage can. I asked him about the guitar and found out he is singer, song writer and guitarist. He performs in local bars on his spare time and has been performing since the young age of five.

My co-worker, Brandi, and I insisted he play us a song. We were instantly blown away by this hidden talent!

The first song Jeff sang was a song he wrote. It was so beautiful that I couldn’t help myself and started to record him playing and singing. The second song was a very familiar Bob Dylan song, “Shelter from the Storm.” It was as if he knew I was a Dylan fan and I mouthed the words along with his singing.

The story was right in front of me – JEFF!

I didn’t want to take the chance of not being able to schedule an interview time, so I interviewed him on the spot. I took still photos and asked him engaging questions. I used the video I shot of him singing and also took a video of Jeff working around school.

I put everything together in iMovie and edited the clips. I’ve had experience with iMovie so the editing wasn’t very difficult. I did learn how to layer clips to get the video I wanted.

I’m sure it’s not perfect, but I sure did enjoy learning about Jeff’s Hidden Talent!
